They started sculpting, digging in Kanheri caves complex about 2100 years ago. The Sopara or Surpark (current Nalasopara), was an important port in ancient India, this has in away laid the foundation for Kanheri caves.
The stupa, known as the coat of Burud King at Sopara, is believed to be built in commemoration of Lord Buddha's Sopara visit. Bhagwanlal Indraji has found the remains of two kings at Sopara. The merchant route from Sopara to Paithan, Ter was passing near Kanheri caves. That is why Kanheri Caves had flourished as an important center of Buddhism.
The flourishing lasted until the 11th-12th century. In brahmi inscription in Kanheri Lena, what was donated, where did the person who donated live, what was her business etc. You get to know many things. One of the many foreign Buddhist monks visiting the caves complex was Chinese traveller and Buddhist monk Huentsung. Huentsung beautifully describes Maharashtra and Kanheri caves in its travel description.
